Today’s reading: Psalm 98:1-4
In the spiritual war that is being fought, God assures His holy warriors of the victory that has already been won. “His right hand and holy arm have won the victory.” (v.1b). God is all powerful, and the enemy has already been defeated, but the battles go on, until the end of time.
Now we are called to be God’s holy warriors, sent forth to engage the enemy. The authentic people of God are assured of His being with us, as He is faithful and merciful. “He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness toward the house of Israel.” (v.3a). God intends His victorious army to reveal His glory to all the nations. “The Lord has made his victory known; has revealed his triumph in the sight of the nations” (v.2). His army is to make a sweep to the ends of the earth. “All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.” (v.3b).
Thus holy warriors march into battle with song and sword. “Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done marvelous deeds.” (v.1a). And through their work, the whole world will worship the Lord with great joy. “Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth; break into song; sing praise.” (v.4).
